Teaching Yoga for Youth
Teaching Yoga for Youth: The Fundamentals course is designed for yoga teachers and yoga teachers in training who have a genuine interest in teaching yoga and mindfulness to youth in schools and community organizations, with a focus on those that mostly work with underserved youth. This course is also intended for school teachers, counselors, social workers, and others who work with youth and want to share the tools of yoga. Yoga experience and experience working with youth is preferred. This course will prepare teachers to adapt yoga techniques for elementary through high school aged youth and lead classes that are trauma-sensitive, age-appropriate, and engaging.
Course participants will:
discuss issues that often affect youth in underserved environments and specific benefits of yoga and mindfulness techniques.
design effective and engaging yoga classes and series for youth at various ages and developmental levels.
practice teaching yoga techniques adapted for school-age youth.
learn useful practices for partnering with schools and youth service organizations.
Instructor Laurie Brockhaus E-RYT 500, LCSW
As a licensed clinical social worker and former elementary and middle school teacher, Laurie Brockhaus has over 15 years experience working with youth and has been teaching yoga for ten years, often to children and teens in schools and community settings. Laurie currently serves as a primary instructor and program advisor for Urban Breath Yoga’s 200 and 300 hour yoga teacher training programs and manages the Oxygen Project. She is excited to merge her skills and experience in teaching yoga, teaching youth, and social service in this course.
