UB Connections: Kate and Carly

By: Cathleen E Williams

We love to hear about yoga bringing people together, and we think you'll enjoy this sweet story of the serendipitous meeting of two good friends at Urban Breath.  It was just a little over a year ago that Kate (brilliant high school Spanish teacher and new mom to yoga baby Virginia) met Carly (amazingly talented photographer and one of the friendly faces you see at UB's front desk), but they've already offered one another endless amounts of support and joy.

Q&A with instructor Amy Bielicke

By: Cathleen E Williams

Amy Bielicke
How long have you been teaching yoga and what made you decide to pursue teaching?
I played sports all my life and taught group fitness classes since the 1990s. After a back injury, I moved to more holistic practices including dance and NIA and started to experience the benefits of mind-body, somatic movement and practices. NIA is a fusion of the dance arts, healing arts, and martial arts, so I decided to study each component beginning with yoga and the healing arts around 2004-2005. I realized yoga was so multi-dimensional, it would take a lifetime to study-so I was hooked and consider myself a lifetime student! I decided to teach because of the many gifts it brought into my life. I wanted to share with others what I experienced.

Kundalini Yoga Pillow Prize

By: Phoenix Amrita Kaur

meditation pillowI am giving away one meditation pillow, like this one, to the student who comes to the Tues/Thurs morning Kundalini classes at Urban Breath the most from October 15th to the end of November.

These pillows are handmade of recycled saris and upholstery fabric. They are filled with buckwheat hulls and are sooo comfortable. Inspiration for the journey! My friend Padmani at PadmaniCraft who makes them is excited to do this. They retail at $54, and are just about the most comfortable meditation pillow I've ever sat on! Come join us and let yourself be inspired!

In a Breath: Form a yoga habit

By: Laurie Brockhaus

Let's face it, we're creatures of habit.  Think of all the things you do on a daily basis (some more beneficial than others, perhaps), often without a thought. What if yoga became as automatic as your morning coffee?  If you've practiced before, you know that euphoric, empowered feeling you're left with after class.  How would your life change if you felt that every day?  During my yoga training in Thailand last month, we practiced Ashtanga Yoga six days a week for 5 weeks, and I've never felt as physically strong, calm, and simply in love with life as I did at the end.  Of course, it takes time and commitment to build a daily yoga habit, but the benefits far outweigh even your morning caffeine fix.
Check out this article for some suggestions for building a daily yoga practice, and if you'd like a whole community supporting you, think about joining us for OMtober, our fall yoga challenge.
Happy Friday!
See you at the studio,
Laurie
P.S.  Did you hear?  Urban Breath was selected as the 2012 Readers' Choice for Best Yoga Studio in the Riverfront Times Best Of Poll.  We appreciate your support!

Tantra-Hatha Yoga

By: Cathleen E Williams

Sherry Summer's new Wednesday night  5:30-6:45pm Tantra-Hatha Yoga class takes it's inspiration from Rod Stryker's ParaYoga.    Following is an except from Rod Stryker's website.

ParaYoga honors all approaches while at the same time reaching back to the masterful teachings that are its authentic source and its most powerful expression. Potentially Asana is more than a way to undo or release stress or focus the mind. In ParaYoga, the aim of Asana is more than improved health, flexibility and strength. It is used as a technique to balance the main forces that sustain mind and the body.

2/3, almost 3/4 done with Binge-Asana!

By: Micah Stanek

A student wrote on the graffiti board yesterday, "It's shocking how infrequently many of us allow ourselves an hour or two a day for our personal well-being. It feels good and right to be setting aside time for daily practice."
