FAQ's about Yoga and UB Yoga Studios

General studio etiquette:
Studio etiquette helps us all have a yoga experience just as it was meant to be.

Be on time to class. If you are late, you may or may not be able to get in depending on if there is reception at the Grove location.  Since Dogtown is a one-room studio, you'll be able to get in but we ask that you kindly don't enter if everyone is still in centering meditation at the beginning of class.

Our studios are open 15 minutes before each scheduled class. If arriving more than15 minutes early you can expect to wait outside.

Turn your cell phone OFF. Not vibrate, but OFF.

Remove your shoes in the lobby, before entering the studio.

A few thing you should know...

Yoga is more than physical exercise. It is a transformative practice that integrates body, mind and spirit. Yoga practice is a way of releasing physical, mental, and emotional tensions to arrive at deeper levels of relaxation and awareness.

  • Always inform your teacher prior to class of any health issues that may affect your performance during the class.
  • Listen to your teacher's instructions carefully.
  • Breathe smoothly and continuously as you move and stretch.
  • Do not hold your breath or strain to attain any positions.
  • Work gently, respecting your body's abilities and limits.
  • Don't perform posture or movements that are painful.
  • Ask your teacher questions if you are unsure of how to perform a certain movement.
  • Pregnant women should consult their heathcare provider before beginning a practice.
  • Menstuating women may decide to avoid inverted postures.
Awareness is fundamental to the practice of yoga. As a student, it is solely your responsibility to monitor each activity offered and determine whether it is appropriate to participate. Though a teacher is present to give instruction you remain primarily responsilbe for your safety and well being.

Is someone there at the studio all day?
At the Grove, we are often (but not always) there from 9am-3pm weekdays.  We have weeknight reception from 5-7:30pm as well as weekend reception on Saturdays 8am-12pm and Sundays 5pm-7:30pm

At Dogtown, no. Being a small neighborhood space, we're not there all day. The doors are open 15 minutes before each class. Get there early so that you don't feel rushed.

What classes are for me?
If you have never done yoga before, please take Yoga Basics for at least six classes. This will give you all the basic information and serve as your yoga orientation, giving you all you need to feel comfortable and confident as you venture into other yoga classes.  We also often offer Yoga 101 workshops and Intro to Yoga series to familiarize you with the fundamentals of the practice.  After you've completed at least six Basics classes, feel free to attend "all level" classes. From there, talk with your instructors and get their advice as you move deeper into your practice.

Is it OK to eat before yoga class?
It's good to drink plenty of water before and after class, but try to come to class with an empty (or nearly empty) stomach.

What happens if the weather is bad?
You can check to see if we have cancelled class because of the weather by visiting our WebScheduler .

What is the WebScheduler?
The WebScheduler is our online studio management system. You can login to the system to purchase a drop-in, a class card, or a membership, to make appointments, to see an up-to-the-minute class schedule with substitutions or cancellations, to see a history of your attendance, and more. Visit the WebScheduler and have a looksy!

What should I bring to class?
We recommended to bring your own yoga mat, but if you don’t have one you can use one of ours. Other than that, you don't need to bring anything to your yoga class.

What should I wear to class?
Wear comfortable clothes that you can move in, and take off your shoes in the lobby before entering the studio. You may find form fitting clothing is best as it stays out of your way as you move through poses, and practicing barefoot is ideal as it helps with grip on the mat.   Limit use of perfume just before class.

What's the best way to contact the someone at the studio?
The best way to contact someone is to send an email to   This email address is being protected from spambots. You need JavaScript enabled to view it. .  Second best way is to leave a message at 314-421-9642. The email is checked many times throughout the day and voicemail is checked once a day. That said, our administration takes the weekends off so if you leave a voicemail on Friday at 5pm you most likely won't hear back until Monday morning.
