Why the Breath is an Integral Piece of Yoga

By: Madeleine Webb

"Master your breath, let the self be in bliss, contemplate on the sublime within you." -T. Krishnamacharya

"When you inhale, you are taking the strength from God. When you exhale, it represents the service you are giving to the world. " B. K. S. Iyengar

Even more dazzling than I imagined.

By: Jee Moon

I just finished the course "Meridians and Chakras" for the second time with Paul and Suzee this year. I first studied it with them two years ago, and I thought this year it would be much easier to understand than the first time around.  It turned out to be even more dazzling than I imagined.

Paul and Suzee

By: Jee Moon

A short note from LMB, no. 2
Jee Moon reflects on her time at Land of Medicine Buddha with her teachers Paul and Suzee Grilley.

My love for yoga anatomy brought me to meet Paul and Suzee back in 2010 in Chicago. Even though I had gone through quite few yoga anatomy courses with well known teachers before Paul, I was always thirsty and wanted more.

Jee Moon at the Land of Medicine Buddha in California

By: Jee Moon

A short note from LMB, no. 1
Jee Moon shares her experience  at the Land of Medicine Budda in California in August, 2015

Already five days past in the Land of Medicine Buddha (LMB).  It is truly a "land of medicine" I am surrounded with full of red wood trees that endlessly rising up to the heaven. There are many Buddha statues and Tibetan prayer wheels in this place that anybody can use to pray.

What's so great about yoga immersions?

By: Madeleine Webb

If you loooooooove yoga and yoga is transforming your life, consider coming in to the studio outside of the classroom experience for an immersion with one of Urban Breath's specialized 500 RYT teachers. Designed to give passionate practitioners a taste of what teacher training is like, weekend immersions are like orientation weekend at college where you drive up and stay in the dorms and eat in the dining halls and get a feel for the college experience. Immersions are a glimpse into the incredibly vast body of knowledge that is yoga. Where the 60 minute or 75 minute yoga class is like maintenance for the body, keeping it strong and supple, with instruction meant to slowly progress the student over time, an immersion is total acceleration: 10-15 hours of study and practice. Taking an immersion is about gaining or matching the momentum of your blossoming yoga practice.

7 Reasons why Weekend Yoga at UB Rocks

By: Madeleine Webb

The last few weekends, I have taught a few Friday afternoon Basics classes, practiced (actually practiced! For teachers, that's a treat!) a few Friday night classes and Stacy's Saturday morning 11:30 Hatha class, enjoyed dreamy yoga in Forest Park on a Sunday morning, and subbed a few extra sunny Memorial Day classes (with a nap in Sutton Loop Park in between). It seems my weekend "days off" are when I actually get in to the yoga studio the most. If you haven't filled your weekend with yoga lately, here are 7 absolutely awesome reasons to get more yoga in on the weekends.

4 Ways to Better Your Down Dog

By: Madeleine Webb

Downward Facing Dog - you've probably spent countless minutes of your life here over the course of your yoga practice. If you've been practicing for a while, your relationship with Downward Facing Dog has probably evolved a lot as you gain new awarenesses and as your body changes. If you have just begun your yoga practice, you may feel like you are still figuring out how to do this asana, or pose.

UB Connections: Kate and Carly

By: Cathleen E Williams

We love to hear about yoga bringing people together, and we think you'll enjoy this sweet story of the serendipitous meeting of two good friends at Urban Breath.  It was just a little over a year ago that Kate (brilliant high school Spanish teacher and new mom to yoga baby Virginia) met Carly (amazingly talented photographer and one of the friendly faces you see at UB's front desk), but they've already offered one another endless amounts of support and joy.

In a Breath: Form a yoga habit

By: Laurie Brockhaus

Let's face it, we're creatures of habit.  Think of all the things you do on a daily basis (some more beneficial than others, perhaps), often without a thought. What if yoga became as automatic as your morning coffee?  If you've practiced before, you know that euphoric, empowered feeling you're left with after class.  How would your life change if you felt that every day?  During my yoga training in Thailand last month, we practiced Ashtanga Yoga six days a week for 5 weeks, and I've never felt as physically strong, calm, and simply in love with life as I did at the end.  Of course, it takes time and commitment to build a daily yoga habit, but the benefits far outweigh even your morning caffeine fix.
Check out this article for some suggestions for building a daily yoga practice, and if you'd like a whole community supporting you, think about joining us for OMtober, our fall yoga challenge.
Happy Friday!
See you at the studio,
P.S.  Did you hear?  Urban Breath was selected as the 2012 Readers' Choice for Best Yoga Studio in the Riverfront Times Best Of Poll.  We appreciate your support!

2/3, almost 3/4 done with Binge-Asana!

By: Micah Stanek

A student wrote on the graffiti board yesterday, "It's shocking how infrequently many of us allow ourselves an hour or two a day for our personal well-being. It feels good and right to be setting aside time for daily practice."

By: Micah Stanek

Greetings Urban Breath Yoga Community! My name is Micah, and I've been working the front desk at Urban Breath in The Grove for the past month. I have met many of the wonderful students that frequently come to the studio, and I am excited about the community of folks practicing here.
